It’s time to continue the recap of our lessons learned in Cuba!
#3: It’s okay to embrace “cheating” while on vacation
While this can apply to indulging in longer meals or shifting bedtimes, for us it was about breaking our rule on screen time.
We work hard not to expose our young child to screens. There are few times our child will watch TV or use the tablet and most of those times coincide with vacation or sickness. While we applaud parents who can keep their child away from screens altogether, we have also noticed that our child loves them (I guess he takes after his parents!) and in desperate situations it’s the only way to keep him distracted when times (aka he) get really tough.
So here’s your blessing, one that we bestowed to ourselves in this trip— if you find yourself needing to actually eat dinner on vacation or you have a screaming child on the plane— embrace your 'cheat' and don’t let the guilt weigh you down.
Keeping yourself calm, happy and sane during these days is what’s important, and if that means giving in to breaking your rules, it’s more than okay, it should be encouraged. With all this, make sure to communicate with your child why you're allowing something you normally don't— vacation is a time for all of us to break free of our normal routines.
So enjoy the little breaks you get, the extra ice cream for dessert and the beautiful sunsets that tend to happen after bedtime, whatever your “cheat” is don’t be afraid to use it, after all it’s vacation!
