Fall Travel Ideas with Kids
I was debating whether to write this post or not, but I figured it’s okay to let this be known to the world — fall is undoubtedly the best time to travel.
For me, it’s the crisp air in the mornings paired with the warm afternoons and cool evenings that make it such an idyllic time to spend outside. Unlike other seasons, temperatures in fall are tame enough in most locations to make travel to any part of the US and abroad very enjoyable.
While we live in New England and are partial to the fall foliage destinations, we’ve compiled a list of top places to jet off with the kids this season. In most places you’ll find reasonable rates and last-minute deals as well as lots of kid-friendly activities.
Kid-friendly Fall Destinations:
Starting close to home (for us), we recommend Nantucket. It has most of the activities you would find in the summer without the crowds — and everyone on the island just seems a little more relaxed. Head to the beach, jump on a bike, visit the whaling museum or take in the views at the lighthouse — all can be done while restaurants, shops and hotels are still open, and deals abound.
Fall makes you want to travel back in time and enjoy the simple things that make the season great. Visiting Dutch Country you can enjoy the fruits of the orchards, homemade baked goods at the Central Market and corn maze fun for the kids at the local farms. Be sure to carve out time for amusement park visits or to head to Adamstown, known as the antiques capital of the US.
Mackinac Island, MI
Who doesn’t love a grand hotel, horse drawn carriage rides and bicycle rides as the main mode of transportation? Mackinac Island, which sits at the tip top of Michigan may be a summer hot spot, but fall is just as great of a time to enjoy this charming national landmark. Take the kids for a picnic, a carriage ride or on a trail and you’ll find a good balance to fill your days without the summer crowds.
San Antonio, TX
October and November is a great time to head to San Antonio to enjoy some of the many kid-friendly activities in the area. From the beautiful bridges on the River Walk to the bounty of options for amusement parks and everything in between — including caverns and the zoo — San Antonio is just the ticket for families looking to pack a lot of fun into a single getaway.
Jackson Hole, WY
Before the ski season kicks in why not visit a place that will leave you and your family in awe with its sweeping landscapes and cozy cabin feel? Jackson Hole may be a winter and summer spot but why not see the turn of the season while hiking the Grand Teton National Park or taking in the views on the Aerial Tram (open until early October)? Whether you decide to attend the Fall Festival or stay cozy indoors you’ll find this to be a great time and destination spot; take a fresh breath, slow down, reconnect with your loved ones and nature in this majestic location.
Wherever you decide to take off remember that it’s worth the time to enjoy this season and spend some extra quality time together. So book your stay, pack your bag (or order a Totts box) and you’ll be 90% there to enjoy your fall holiday.
